Bell Ringers - Chapter 2 On page 67, who founded the “City on a Hill”? How many people left England for America in the Great Migration? What colony bought the colony of Maine? What colony was once New Amsterdam but was renamed after being taken by the Duke of York? What 2 colonies were owned by William Penn? Capt. John Mason started the colony of_____.

Using ½ sheets of paper cut long-ways… Stack up all 7 sheets. Spread them out on top of each other leaving about a half inch of each sheet exposed.

Now fold it in half so that you have 14 pages (or tabs) and staple on the crease. The title goes on the top page. Each colony’s name goes on the tiny tab sticking out Information about the colony goes above it

Rhode Island 1644 Started by Puritans unhappy with Massachusetts – Anne Hutchison, Roger Williams Newport, Warwick, Providence, and Portsmouth combined to form R.I. Based on total separation of church and state

Connecticut 1636 Thomas Hooker Frustrated with the political system of Mass., Hooker started his own colony Hooker wanted every man to be able to vote Defeated Pequot Indians in a war

New York 1614 (Dutch) 1664 (English) Duke of York Dutch bought Manhattan Island for $24 in trinkets Dutch used island to smuggle goods to English colonies Duke of York captured island with 4 warships without firing a shot

New Jersey 1664 Duke of York Granted land to allies for helping conquer New York Named in honor of Sir George Carter from the Isle of Jersey Offered generous land grants, religious freedom, and the right to vote to attract settlers

Delaware 1682 William Penn Penn became so wealthy from his Pennsylvania colony that he bought land from the Duke of York for his personal use Named Delaware after the local Indians

Maryland 1632 Lord Baltimore Started as a refuge for Catholics Most settlers were Protestant Baltimore owned this proprietary colony and could rule it as he wished
