Objectives: Analyze literary fiction through collaborative, seminar discussion. Compose a critical reflection of a text. Catalyst: 9.7/9.10 Turn in Poetry 1.1 (make sure it’s in turnitin.com) Have your notecard with DQs and your literary criticisms as well as composition book to keep notes. Pre-seminar reflection in composition book Homework & Reminders: Next class: “The Most Dangerous Game” (annotate and answer ?s 2, 8 in composition book) Native Son pre-reading and Book 1 reading check 9.20/9.21.

Housekeeping: Apologies As of Thursday evening, I received 61 apology emails Those emails ranged from: Sincere apology to Embarrassment to Insincere back-tracking

Housekeeping: Apologies What you should take from this: Cite anything that doesn’t come from your experiences You are not expected to get “the right answer” at all times; what do YOU notice? Within reason, this class asks you to analyze using the text you’re given Trying to impress anyone does not help you Our day 1 (and day 2) discussions involved your understanding that you must accept failure and the opportunity to keep trying; that is true of writing, and it is true of analysis I forgive first mistakes

Tackling the MWDS Get the pre-reading stuff out of the way NOW Highlight characters as you go Transfer them to the MWDS, including some characteristics Write down plot points as you go As soon as you have insights on Bigger and his relationship with other characters, note that! You’ll have to save closing scene, motifs/symbols, and thematic statements for the end of the novel Saving EVERYTHING for the MWDS for when you finish the novel will STRESS YOU OUT Pace yourselves Do you want MWDS checks?

Pre-seminar reflection Reflect on your experience with the novel. Put your reflection in your composition notebook Include the following: Can you implement the ideas of this novel in your current life? How? What has this novel meant to you? What are you hoping to still take away from this experience?

Candide seminar Expectations: 30 formal points Someone should begin discussion by asking a question, stating an opinion, or bringing up a motif Feel free to discuss the essay prompt (students who missed the test will have a separate prompt) This seminar may help you in the revision process Everyone is expected to contribute and actively listen A small group of individuals should not dominate Keep notes and keep track of who is contributing

Candide seminar Post-Reflection You’re probably thinking: Mrs. Garrison, I LOVE how economical you are with printing stuff off for us. Thank you! I appreciate that! Find your post-reflection on Google Classroom.
