Reducing Diet Pepsi Consumption Using TQM

I would like to decrease my daily consumption of Diet Pepsi. Problem Statement

Extent of Problem

Description of Problem By over-consuming Diet Pepsi, no water or other beverages such as juices are consumed in my diet. The habit of consuming Diet Pepsi in the evening results in frequent trips to the bathroom during the night. Diet Pepsi is high in sodium, which can contribute to hypertension. Diet sodas also affect intake of various minerals and vitamins. In diet sodas, artificial sweeteners may raise health concerns. Aspartame has been linked in human studies to urinary-bladder cancer and in animal studies to cancers of the bladder and other organs.

Diet Pepsi is high in caffeine which can lead to dependence on the product. Caffeine can cause nervousness, irritability, sleeplessness, and rapid heart beat. One problem with caffeine is that it increases the excretion of calcium in urine. Drinking 12 ounces of caffeine-containing soft drink causes the loss of about 20 milligrams of calcium, or two percent of the U.S. RDA (or Daily Value). The cost of purchasing Diet Pepsi is costly, with little nutritional benefits. Description of Problem

Environmental Physiological Psychological Dislike the taste of municipal water Caffeine addiction Addictive tendencies/ Personality soft drink machines easily accessible Prepared juices are too sweet Busy schedule Problem Description (fishbone diagram) Social Coworkers drink in meetings Headaches when not consumed. Caffeine consumption is a norm.

How will success be measured? Document the amount of Diet Pepsi consumed daily in a daily journal. Post cumulative results on the refrigerator door and share with process owner (Cynthia). Monitor signs and symptoms of caffeine withdrawal such as headache and jitteriness each day.

Data Collection

Histogram of Data

Data Analysis Analysis of the data collected, as represented in the histogram, would indicate that I have decreased the amount of Diet Pepsi consumed over a nine-week period. However, the histogram doesnt signify that I have reduced my consumption beyond what can be expected by random chance. The following control chart clearly illustrates that I have been successful in my personal improvement endeavors beyond a chance happening.

Control Chart of Success Time periods 7, 8, & 9 reflect consumption that is below the lower control limit, which indicates that these data points reflect a true decrease in consumption beyond what can be expected by chance.
