Warm-Up: How are people affecting the physical environment and vice versa in these pictures?

Objective SWBAT identify and explain the difference between adaptation and modification

Adapt – VS – Modify What is the difference between adapting and modifying?? To ADAPT is to change something about your needs to fit your surroundings To MODIFY is to change something about your surroundings to fit your needs

ADAPTATION and modification Like all animals, people must adapt to or modify their environment. That includes the bodies of water, landforms, climate, plants, and animals they find in the place they live.

Adaptation People have to adapt to their environment because they may not have a choice in where they live.

Bodies of Water People must adapt to the water sources available to them Fresh water is essential to human life. Why do you think this is so? Food Drink Livestock Bathing Transportation

What bodies of water do we have around us What bodies of water do we have around us? Where does our fresh water come from? What is an Aquifer ?? ADAPTATION or MODIFICATION?

Landforms People must adapt to landforms. Most people settle in flat, fertile valleys and plains so they can build homes and grow crops. Where would you live?

How did this land affect how the Incas (One of the earliest civilizations) lived? Hint…they lived high in the Andes Mountains with frigid temperatures and barren land ADAPTATION ??

Climate Pattern of weather over a period of time People must adapt to their climate Climate affects How we dress What we grow Plants Livestock What shelter we live in

Plant and Animal Life People have to adapt to the plants and animals found where they live. People use these as sources of food, clothing, and building materials.

Take a look at the items in your bag – what part of the world might a person using these things be from? Would they indicate a modification or adaptation?

Group Work Case Studies! On a sheet of notebook paper, your group needs to plan a presentation including: What this is a picture of – include some of the background about the structure or group of people. Whether this picture shows adaptation, modification, or both and why.
