Energy Intensity of Fertilization Inorganic fertilizers are major consumers of energy in the agricultural sector. In the United States, inorganic fertilization accounts for about a third of total energy input to crop production. The bulk of energy use associated with fertilizers is not consumed directly at the agricultural site. The energy use is indirectly during production, packaging, and transportation to the site of Inorganic fertilizer. Additional energy is also used onsite during fertilizer application. Most fertilizer energy use is attributable to the production of nitrogen fertilizers with natural gas.

Key aspects of Energy Management in Manufacturing

Supporting Tools and Methods Major classification: (a) Energy-based analysis and decision making in manufacturing environments. (b) Modelling and analysis of energy efficient practices. Improving EE in production facilities has become a big challenge for managers regardless of the industrial sector. A shift towards energy efficient manufacturing systems, demands special tools and skills. Major objective of these tools is to model and assess energy consumption behavior in a manufacturing environment.

Sub-components of Supporting Tools and Methods These supporting tools and methods concern: (i) Modelling and analysis (ii) Emission calculation and sustainability assessment (iii) Energy assessment (iv) Benchmarking

Priority Pyramid for STM

Key aspects of Energy Management in Manufacturing

Strategic Paradigms Need for development of policies and strategies concerned with the advancement of industrial EE. These are characterized by their interest/impact on the long term impacts produced by the implementation. Classification of Strategic Elements: (i) Standardization and policy (ii) R&D and Innovation (iii) Technology selection, development and deployment (iv) Strategic decisions (v) Voluntary initiatives

Prioritization of SP Elements

Key aspects of Energy Management in Manufacturing

Manufacturing Process Paradigms Deals with re-design of manufacturing process. Mainly comprises of innovations, changes and diverse proposals for Development of new technologies. Mainly aimed at reducing the environmental impact associated with energy use in manufacturing processes. The major focal point is process engineering, design and management.

Requirements for Manufacturing Process Paradigms Finding improvements to actual systems in terms of environmental impacts. Development of energy efficient manufacturing technologies for specific industrial sectors. Manufacturing processes captures an important part of researchers. Other points include energy control policies and green scheduling.

Key aspects of Energy Management in Manufacturing

Manufacturing Performances The outcome of the implementation of EMM. The impact of EMM practices on other traditional performance measures. Impact on financial and non-financial benefits.
