Efficient Data Format for CLM MVWG meeting, San Diego March 2016

CMPLDW today 130+ parameters, represents over 2/3 the data in the WECC dyd file…

Where does the data come from? Climate Zones + Feeder Types = LID A residential load on the northwest coast woud have a different composition than a commerical load in the Desert southwest Sometimes WECC has referred to a Climate Zone + Feeder type combo as just a “climate zone”, but that is really a misnomer because the feeder types in the green box don’t have anything to do with a climate zone at all. i.e. “NWC_RES”

CMPLDW today “Long ID” (LID) is assigned to each load in a power flow case Load model data tool generates dynamic data based on LID+season+ hour

Proposed Efficient Data Format Define “load descriptor” objects in DYD file The “load descriptor” in the dyd file must match LID assigned to the load in the power flow All loads that have a particular LID (i.e. “NWC_RES”) will be assigned the same set of CMPLDW parameters These parameters will only be listed once: as part of the load descriptor declaration A particular load descriptor = LID + season + hour Similar to “CMPLDWX” model proposed by Bill Price at our June 2017 meeting

Proposed Efficient Data Format

Blanket CMPLDW Data Record -Area

Blanket CMPLDW - Zone

Hierarchy Bus-Level Load Descriptor (linked to LID) Owner Zone Area Cmpldw – (new declaration of cmpldw, not the full version) Motorw Any other load model Load Descriptor (linked to LID) This is the new “standard model” – every load SHOULD have a LID associated with it. Owner Zone Area Initialized (ZIP) Model

Pros and Cons of Approach A lot of redundant data would be eliminated Only 60 full cmpldw declarations instead of 10,000 Make clear to user the purpose of LID’s Easily to do sensitivity analysis for particular LID Cons Still significant amount of redundant data

Load Descriptors In WECC, there will be a unique load descriptor for a given LID, season, and hour A heavy winter 0700h “NWC_RES” load descriptor would be different from a heavy summer 1800h “NWC_RES” load descriptor In WECC, load descriptors are based on a particular climate zone + feeder type combination (i.e. NWC_RES) Climate zones could be developed for other regions (outside WECC) Or could be based on something else entirely PJM residential load could be designated by a “PJM_RES” load descriptor

Possible Future Development Adding Flexibility to CLM declarations Allows users to run sensitivity studies more easily Similar to “_CMPLDX” from Bill Price Define 8 different types of data groups: For example you could have distribution data 1 for feeders that use LTCs and dist data 2 for feeders that don’t use LTCs
