Disorders of the Endocrine System
Main Function: hormones into the blood It releases hormones into the blood to signal other cells to behave in certain ways. It is a slow but WIDESPREAD.
The Endocrine system Glands and hormones.
Thyroid Disorders. Endocrine Glands Collection of glands that secrete hormones directly into the bloodstream.  Adrenal glands, parathyroid glands, pancreas,
Endocrine Disorders. System Review Simply put, endocrinology is the study of endocrine glands. Endocrine glands are a group of glands in the body which.

Endocrine System Diseases and Disorders. Gigantism  hyper GH before 25  extreme skeletal size.
Gigantism  Hyperfunction of pituitary – too much growth hormone  In preadolescent – overgrowth of long bones leads to excessive tallness.
Regulatory Systems Hormones = molecules synthesized and secreted into body fluids Endocrine gland – ductless, secretes hormones into blood stream Exocrine.
The Endocrine System l With nervous system coordinates the function of all body systems l Regulates homeostasis through hormones.
Diseases and Disorders of the Endocrine System Acromegaly l caused by the hypersecretion of hGH during adulthood l also caused by steroid and hGH use.
1 ENDOCRINE SYSTEM. 2Hormones Self-regulating system Production –Extremely small amounts –Highly potent Affect: –Growth –Metabolism –Behavior Two categories:
Endocrine Disorders. Type I Diabetes High blood sugar level (hyperglycemia) – >200 mg/dL – shaking, sweating, anxiety, hunger, difficulty concentrating,

Gallery walk: Endocrine disorders Add the following to a new page of notes You will need at least one more page for this Go to each table and take notes from the posters Include: Name of disorder Gland involved Symptoms Causes (don’t do treatments)

Endocrine disorders: pituitary Gigantism- high GH, normal body proportion Acromegaly- high GH but with enlarged extremities Dwarfism Low GH Diabetes insipidus Low ADH, huge urine output

Pituitary over secretes ACTH Cushing’s Disease Pituitary over secretes ACTH (sometimes caused by over secretion of cortisol) Symptoms include: Weight gain, high blood pressure, hump in back, change in face

Hyperthyroidism (over secretion) Endocrine disorders Hyperthyroidism (over secretion) high metabolic rate, increased appetite Graves Disease Autoimmune disease? Sweating, increased metabolism, protruding eyes Hypothyroidism (under secretion) Low metabolic rate, weight gain, Intolerance to heat (called cretinism in babies when severe) May be due to lack of iodine, which forms a goiter

Diabetes mellitus Hypoglycemia Endocrine disorders Insulin is either absent or deficient Genetic and viral infections Hypoglycemia Anxiety, nervousness
