Background
What is Antisocial Personality Disorder? “Sometimes called sociopathy, [it] is a mental condition in which a person consistently shows no regard for right and wrong and ignores the rights and feelings of others” (Mayo Clinic) Tendencies to antagonize, manipulate, or treat others with harsh indifference Showing no guilt or remorse for one’s behavior
Difficulties of Treatment Most people with the disorder reject treatment as they believe they do not need help Feel little sympathy for others and thus are unaffected by their actions Behavior is most prominent in early life and must be treated before it develops
Importance of Treatment Many negative complications if left untreated: spouse/child/alcohol abuse homicidal/suicidal tendencies (school shootings) gang participation
Measures intended to prevent antisocial personality disorder must begin with interventions in early childhood, before youths are at risk for developing conduct disorder. -Minddisorders.com
