Salem, Massachusetts, 1692 A time of vengeance and power. The Crucible Review Salem, Massachusetts, 1692 A time of vengeance and power.

Characters Abigail Williams- Niece of Reverend Parris, in love with John Proctor. She is the first of the girls to cry witch. Judge Danforth- Deputy Governor, and judge of the witch trials.

Characters (cont.) Thomas Putnam- Most wealthy citizen in Salem. His daughter, Ruth, accuses others of being witches. He is greedy and not well liked. Tituba- slave of Rev. Parris. Accused of doing witchcraft with the girls. Believed to talk to spirits.

Characters (cont.) Giles Corey- Wife is accused of witchcraft. Well versed in the law. Pressed to death rather than make a plea. Last words: “more weight.” Mary Warren- Servant to the Proctors. Accuses others of witchcraft, but briefly changes her mind.

Characters (cont.) Reverend Hale- Minister of Beverly. Expert on witches, goes from believing there are witches in Salem to knowing it is a hoax. Rebecca Nurse- Mother of eleven, well respected. Accused of witchcraft.

Characters (cont.) Ann Putnam- Lost seven babies shortly after birth and blames others for their loss. Reverend Parris- Minister in Salem. Paranoid that others are working against him. His daughter and niece accuse others of witchcraft. More concerned about his reputation than his child.

Characters (cont.) Ruth Putnam- Goes to Tituba for help about her dead siblings. Is shocked when she is caught dancing in the woods with Tituba. Accuses others of witchcraft. Elizabeth Proctor- Accused of being a witch, but not put to death (pregnant). Despite the fact her husband thinks she “cannot lie” she lies about his affair and ends up condemning him.

Characters (cont.) John Proctor- A farmer who had an affair with Abigail he broke it off and says Abigail “will be put in the stocks by the time [she] is twenty.” When asked to recite his commandments, he forgets “adultery.” Does not like Rev. Parris.
