Principal Values of the Inverse Trig Functions

Arcsin is found the same way as sin-1 When you find the Arcsin (Arccos, Arctan, etc.) of a number, your answer will be an angle (either in degrees or radians). Arcsin & sin are inverses of each other (also cos, & tan respectively). When your answer isn’t an angle measure (as in, “sin(Arcsin x)”), then it should be written as an exact ratio (not decimal)…for this assignment :)

Ex. Arctan is found the same way as tan-1

Ex. Arcsin & sin are inverses of each other (also cos, & tan respectively). We take the sin of ANGLES & Arcsin of #s. Follow the order of operations.

Here are some more examples… In other words, what is the cos of the angle whose sin=1/2 ? For this last example, on a calculator, it must be in radian mode.
