How to use research during committee Concepts Speeches Informal Debate Working Papers Application Speeches: be able to highlight main points of country policy Informal Debate: know who to talk to and has a similar stance as your country Explanation Gives more depth to speeches Understand not just what, but how and why for country actions Gives a more thorough explanation of how to combat the issues

Method: Research Binders Why Contain information in an orderly fashion Cases in which Internet access is not permitted at conferences How Hard Copy Committee Background Guide Position Papers Country Position/Information News articles, statements from UN delegate, country’s UN page Electronic Apps like Pocket allow you to archive online sources Useful resources for research: CIA World Factbook, Wikipedia, UN Documents Database, your country’s UN homepage, Online news outlets

Time: 20 minutes Activity Each person will be assigned a country plus an issue associated with it, and will be expected to be able to give a quick, 30 second speech on the subject. Activity Steps Step 1: Look over topic assignment Step 2: Research for 10 minutes Step 3: People will be selected to present speeches Both presenters are available to answer questions!

Reflection Know what makes good research. Find valuable sources to put in your research binder. Apply your research in committee. Research not only gives a better understanding of the topic, but better confidence walking in Any information, from reliable sources, that are useful in aiding debate Research will be helpful in speeches, informal debate, and in working papers
