Live Production Multimedia Broadcast

Live production methods Streaming Live to tape Event production Pre-produced

Live production: Streaming Broadcast Event A piece of entertainment Sports Service, ceremony or memorial

Live production: Streaming Popular broadcast services: High School Cube UStream Livestream YouTube Live Stringwire Periscope/Meerkat

Live production: Streaming Who uses this technique? Schools Companies Those who cannot afford a live broadcast

Live production: Live to tape The same as streaming/broadcast, only the entire production is recorded to “tape” (also known as a hard disk or drive) Most productions are then just played as-is. Some producers will then come back and edit for content or time trimming.

Live production: Event production Any event, including: Graduation Sporting events School ceremonies Memorials or tributes Sometimes these events are projected onto a large screen for the audience to have a better view. Other times they are live-to-tape because of limited internet/ projector availability.

Live production: Pre-produced Most of the show elements are produced in advance. Can be: Video packages B-Roll Interviews Requires some time of video switcher/ playback system.

Live production tools Video switchers Camera(s) Adapters and related cords Tripods Extension cords Gaffer tape Projector/screen/speaker Tally lights

Live production checklist Make sure you have reliable Internet before you tell the public about your live event (if streaming). Have a tripod – no one likes to watch a shaky live event. Have a power source beyond the camera’s battery.

Live production checklist Know your audio situation Are you using a switcher, tablet, phone, etc.? Set up your audio accordingly; think about whether your audience will want to listen in. Test your stream early How does the lighting look? Is there someone standing in front of your camera? Have a publicity plan in place If you don’t notify your audience where and how to watch, they won’t.

Live production checklist What equipment and/or supplies would you add for your class?

Live production crew Who works a live production? Depends on your equipment/show Simulation Panel discussion between two local politicians with a host Resources available three cameras three microphones live switcher basic light kit

Live production crew What crew do you need? Discuss in small groups and decide how many crew members you would like to have/how many crew members you need.

Live production crew Did your group decide that your crew depends on your setup? Organization and planning are key. How did you set up your cameras? This will impact how many camera operators you need. How would you direct the cameras on the next slide?
