1 Matter and Change. 2 What is Matter?  Matter is anything that takes up space and has mass.  Mass is the amount of matter in an object.
Not Everything is a Compound!!!. First…Let ’ s Review We know about two categories of matter: Elements and Compounds (Pure substances)
CH. 2 SEC.1 DESCRIBING MATTER GOAL STUDENTS- WILL LEARN ABOUT MATTER AND ITS CHEMICAL AND PHYSICAL PROPERTIES.
Classification of Matter. 1. Mixture – Two or more pure substances mixed together. Each substance in the mixture retains its own set of chemical and physical.
Element – a substance that cannot be broken down into simpler substance by chemical means. Atom – the smallest unit of an element that still has all of.

CHEMISTRY THE STUDY OF MATTER AND HOW IT CHANGES CHEMISTRY CH 1 SEC 1 CHEMISTRY THE STUDY OF MATTER AND HOW IT CHANGES

BUILDING BLOCKS OF MATTER ELEMENTS Cannot be broken down into simpler substances (a pure substance) Compounds Two or more atoms chemically combined in a definite ratio Ex CO2 This compound has 1 part C for every 2 O

COMPOUNDS In nature the majority of chemicals are found as compounds

MIXTURES & SOLUTIONS MIXTURES Are made up of elements or compounds in the same place but not chemically combined. EX salt and pepper SOLUTIONS A well mixed mixture usually a liquid Ex Sea water- You can’t see the salt but you can taste it and it can be separated easily

CHANGES IN MATTER PHYSICAL CHANGE A change that effects the form or appearance of a substance BUT no new material is formed. Ex- water is boiled and becomes a gas But it is still WATER (vapor)

CHANGES IN MATTER CHEMICAL CHANGES A change that produces new substances but the same elements are used. EX when wood burns-Carbon,xygen and water are formed.

OBSERVING CHEMICAL REACTIONS COLOR CHANGE PRECIPITATE FORMED GAS PRODUCED CHANGE IN TEMPERATURE EXOTHERMIC ENDOTHERMIC CHANGE IN PROPERTIES
