How to remember analysis? Use cue cards. Write the quote on one side. Write the analysis on the back in note form. (AJ = nature = powerful + hard working etc) Get someone to test you or test yourself! Complete practice questions from the study pack – the more you use the analysis the easier it will be to recall.

Ways to revise the poems? Use the Knowledge Organiser you have been given to learn contextual information, as well as information about key themes. Use the ‘Snap Revision’ book to revise alternative annotations and complete some of the questions contained within it. Use cue cards. Complete your study pack. Find a blank copy of each poem + go through, identifying techniques etc (practice for the exam when you will only have a blank copy).

How do Hotel Room, 12th Floor + Aunt Julia develop the theme of fear? Fearful of the violence throughout the city – “glazed”, extended metaphor of wild west, “no stockades can keep the midnight out”, “harsh screaming” etc. Fearful of what society is becoming (similar to above). Fearful of technology and the effect it is having on our modern world. Aunt Julia Fear of losing the relationship. Fear of never being able to communicate (perhaps) Fear of losing Scottish heritage – AJ is the link MacCaig has to Scottish culture, and he is scared that once AJ is gone, so too will her way of life. He has written the poem to alert readers to this culture/tradition/heritage – to preserve it from being lost too!

Why does MacCaig avoid going into detail about technology? It is not the key message – it is simply an additional observation he makes. He uses imagery to convey the extent to which technology can be destructive. However, he focuses on the violence that he sees everywhere as this is the key message – violence has always been, and will always be, a part of human nature  this is the key message.

What age is Norman MacCaig? How many poems has he written? MacCaig is no longer with us – he died in 1996 aged 85. Wrote about 26 poems (that I can find – I will double check) + a number of anthologies (collections of poems).

Studying Create and use cue cards. Answer the questions on the back of your Knowledge Organiser. Ask questions on my blog if you are concerned about anything. Do not leave it until the first week back as one double period is not enough time to allay concerns and complete sufficient practice. Complete your study pack – all tasks, and at least 2 questions for each poem (however – would recommend that you complete more than that!) Create your own timed paper from the questions at the end of your pack – information contained within it re timings and question selection. Use the ‘Snap Revision’ resource given to you to enhance your understanding of these texts and complete practice questions.
