Mechanics GOAL: I can clearly communicate my ideas. What do I need to do to accomplish this? SUCCESS CRITERIA: Accurate spelling Accurate grammar (including capitalization and punctuation) Applies formal writing conventions Effective diction/descriptive language

Structure GOAL: I can organize my ideas meaningfully. What do I need to do to accomplish this? SUCCESS CRITERIA: Begins with a clear, specific topic sentence that introduces the subject of the paragraph (or argument) Supporting sentences provide three different, relevant supporting points/examples Ends with a summarizing concluding sentence Transition words/phrases are used to connect ideas Paragraph has a clear focus Quotations are integrated properly

Quality of Argument GOAL: I can build a thoughtful and convincing argument. What do I need to do to accomplish this? SUCCESS CRITERIA Argument is clear and specific Three supporting points/examples are relevant Specific proof and explanation are provided for each supporting point Quotations are included as specific proof [“She was serious about it, too” (King 87).]
