Day 4: John Ashbery and Etheree Poetry

Poet Focus John Ashbery

Etheree An Etheree is a 10-line poem in which each line follows a syllable count that matches the line number. For example, the first line has one syllable, the second has two, etc. Lower word/syllable counts mean that each holds more power – therefore, every chosen word is important The poem is unrhymed but has rhythm, meaning, imagery, and sometimes an underlying second meaning.

Double Etheree Example The clovers of our youth were dreams hidden in the green of our innocence. Wishes were three leafs in abundance and every now and then we found a four in the luck of our dreams come true and the green clovers tinged gold as we grew. Nature's first green was a clover of dream in innocence of childhood wonder. We searched for four and found something more in the gold of our dreams come true and as we grow though we went separate ways, we recall the green of clover days.

For the rest of class: Practice Etheree Poetry 1 quality Etheree will be included in your project Don’t forget the poetry analyses that need to be included in your project! Remember – all of your poems need to utilize dystopian themes in some way
