Matter and Energy Target 1-1 September 13, 2017

Target 1-1 I can describe energy and matter by using physical and chemical properties

What are properties? Properties = characteristics of a sample that can be used to describe it Color Size Shape Behavior Texture

Physical Properties Physical Properties can be observed in a sample using our 5 senses and/or measurement tools Size (length, volume, mass, etc.) Shape Color Texture Special Properties

Special Physical Properties Density = a relationship between mass and volume (D = M/V) An object will sink if it is more dense than water An object will float if it is less dense than water Luster = whether a substance is shiny Opacity = whether a substance is see-through (transparent) or not (opaque)

Checkpoint! Which of the following has luster? Dirt c. Water A new penny d. A diamond Which of the following is opaque? A window b. A wall

Chemical Properties Chemical Properties can only be observed if we test the sample with something else Flammability (does it catch on fire?) Conductivity (does electricity pass through it?) Reactivity (does it react with ____?) Solubility (does it dissolve in water?)

Checkpoint! Which substance is soluble in water? Salt c. A pebble Mud d. Olive oil Which substance is conductive? A wooden board c. A nickel Water d. A rubber band

Matter vs. Energy Everything in the universe is either matter or energy Matter has mass and volume Energy does not!

Matter vs. Energy Matter exists in 3 states Solid Liquid Gas

Matter vs. Energy Energy exists in many forms Thermal energy (heat) Kinetic energy (movement) Potential energy (stored in a substance) Electrical energy (electricity) Solar energy (stars) Nuclear energy

Checkpoint! Matter or energy? The sun Chocolate chip cookie The atmosphere An X-ray A tree You Bowling Ball Heat off a parking lot
