Presentation transcript:

P.E (Tuesday and Friday) ENGLISH As Writers, we will be using a range of different books linked to the theme of light and dark. These include, ‘The Dark’ by Lemony Snicket, ‘The Night Dragon’ by Naomi Howarth and a variety of poems about light. We will have the opportunity to write for a range of purposes including information texts on the dragon who could make the sun set by flying, diary entries and narratives which show gripping openings and strong plots. We will learn about characterisation based on a character who can talk to the dark. We will also be writing list poems which focus on how beautiful colours and light can affect our senses. We will develop the range of vocabulary in our writing and our stamina to write more extended pieces. MATHEMATICS As Mathematicians, we will be practising our use of measurement by calculating the size of our shadows at different times of the day. We will collate this information into tables to make simple inferences which link with our science. We will be making bar charts based on how many hours of daylight different countries get in specific months and comparing it with others. In addition to this, we will be answering simple word problems which focus on the statistics around lighthouses. This is in addition to our daily maths lessons. READING As Readers, we will be absorbing ourselves in the illuminate theme through a wide variety of fiction and non-fiction. We will use these books to develop our understanding of the language within our topic which we will use to enhance our writing. We will continue to develop our comprehension skills through predicting, asking questions and linking books to the wider world. ILLUMINATe! Year 3 – Term 1 P.E (Tuesday and Friday) As Athletes, we will be improving our team work skills and completing various orienteering tasks which require us to work together effectively. We will also be completing our week block of swimming so children will need their swimming kits every day of the w/b 24th September. After the block, we will be swimming every Tuesday afternoon for the rest of term 1. Please ensure that your child has a full PE kit including trainers. Children will be completing lessons outside if the weather is fine. HISTORY As Historians, we are going to be carrying out a focused study on the Romans in Britain. It will begin by looking at the Myth and factual retelling of how the Roman civilization started and move on to a debate on why they invaded Britain. We will look at the famous Roman Baths and design our own Roman leisure guide. We will then design a large Roman settlement based on our new knowledge of their distinctive engineering style. SCIENCE As Scientists, we will be finding out all about the importance of light in our lives. We will carry out experiments which answer questions about light, dark and reflective materials and surfaces. We will be investigating with shadows and learning to report our findings using a variety of presentation styles. DT As Designers, we will be researching, designing and crafting shadow theatres. We will sketch initial ideas of what traditional theatres look like and begin to measure, and cut materials to fit specific purposes. We will select fabric for the curtains and paint the exterior to create our finished product. ART As Artists, we will be looking at how artists use warm and cool colour to express mood and movement within images of the sky. We will be making quick studies of sunrises, sunsets and the natural phenomenon of the Aurora Borealis. We will also be combining our English non-fiction writing with our art work by creating sketches of creatures who inhabit the colourful sky landscapes. GEOGRAPHY As Geographers, we will be learning to find countries within the Northern and Southern Hemisphere and their relationship with the sun. We will find countries using latitude and longitude and compare living environments in countries that sometimes only get a few hours of daylight. Finally, we will take a closer look at time zones and the connection between them, seasons and our earth’s rotation around the sun.
