Third Grade Newsletter GIFTED GAZETTE 2.3 Oct. 30th - Nov. 3rd What we’re learning this week… Spelling, Vocabulary, & Test Schedule Reading: Nonfiction Text Features This week we will… determine the characteristics of nonfiction text become familiar with nonfiction text features: titles, subtitles, photographs, captions, labels, diagrams, maps, special print (bold, italics, underlined) apply strategies to read and comprehend informational articles Language/Writing: identify, create, and use present tense verbs use a “mentor sentence” to apply grammar skills wrap-up Shiloh text with “3-D Dodecahedron” in-class project Spelling: spelling pattern -ir, -ur, -er, -or Math: This week we will… study data in input/output tables to determine the operational rule, then use the rule to find the missing elements in the table continue to solve one- and two-step word problems involving addition and subtraction enrichment of curriculum through Math Stars problem solving and Math Merchants class store Project of the Week (P.O.W.): due Friday Research: Dog breed research will coincide with our nonfiction reading unit. Each child will choose a breed and use print and electronic resources to locate needed information and ultimately write a non-fiction report. Students will also begin researching/formulating a brochure to teach others proper ways to care for a pet. These are both in-class research assignments. On-Level Spelling: dirty, purse, birth, curl, curve, curb, person, shirt, worse, hurl, twirl, swirl, herb, turkey, turnip, purpose, blurred, sternly, serpent, pearl, hear, spare, lair, spurt, further Classical Roots Vocab.: Lesson 12 pages Review Week (Lessons 9-11) FRIDAY Test Schedule: Reading: nonfiction reading comprehension test, refer to classwork for studying Vocabulary: Lesson 12 review test (multiple choice only) Language: In-class Shiloh 3-D Dodecahedron project will be graded according to rubric Mentor Sentence Assessment Spelling: Test Math: Test on patterns & input/output tables and addition and subtraction word problems. Our expectations require students to “SHOW YOUR WORK” using a either a number sentence, picture, model, etc…we must see their thinking and the steps taken to solve problems to receive full credit. (model, equation, solution, sentence) Use the pre-test to review/prepare! A note from the teachers THANK YOU Dr. Grasperge for sharing your expertise with our kids! We might have some budding veterinarians in our future:) Storybook Character Day is Tuesday, 10/31. We hope our gifted kiddos choose to show their quick wit and creativity by dressing in a clever “pun costume” OR other character costume of their choice. Multiplication Sundae Celebration is set for Tuesday, 10/31. Congrats to all of our boys and girls (and parents) who worked so hard preparing and studying their facts each week.
