Limiting and Excess Reactants

Vocab Limiting Reactant: the reactant that limits the amount of the other reactant that can combine and the amount of a product that can form in a chemical reaction. Excess Reactant: the substance that is not used up completely in a reaction.

Steps: Balance the equation! Use a stoichiometry problem to determine the number of units for the first reactant. Use a stoichiometry problem to determine the number of units for the second reactant. NOTICE: YOU ARE DOING TWO DIFFERENT STOICHIOMETRY PROBLEMS!!! Look at the smallest answer. Follow it all the way to the beginning of your problem. The reactant (formula) that you started this problem with is your limiting reactant. Therefore, the other one is your excess reactant.

Example Using the unbalanced equation: H2 + O2 H2O. If I have 14.0 grams of H2 and 48.0 grams of O2, how many grams of water can I make? Using the unbalanced equation: H2 + O2  H2O.
