UAlbany Compliance Corner December 2018 Student-Athlete Edition Vacation Period Reminders Housing Those staying on campus during the winter break must remember to apply for recess housing. The application can be completed on the Res Life My Involvement page. Meals Those staying on campus for practice and competition can be provided meals or the cash equivalent. Team Entertainment Your coaches can provide reasonable entertainment in conjunction with practice or competition for those teams in-season. Practice Hours Daily and weekly practice hour limitations do not apply during vacation periods for in-season sports. Out-of-season sports are not permitted to practice during vacation periods. Out-of-Season (8 hour segment) All countable athletically related activities outside the playing season are prohibited during institutional vacation periods. All countable athletically related activities outside the playing season are prohibited one week prior to the beginning of the final examination period.   In-Season (20 hour segment) Countable athletically related activity limitations do not apply during institutional vacation periods, except they cannot take place between midnight and 5:00am. Daily and weekly hour limitations apply to countable athletically related activities during final examination period and all official preparatory periods leading up to the final exam period. Compliance Trivia Minimum GPA Requirements As the fall semester comes to an end, just a reminder of the minimum cumulative GPA requirements needed to maintain eligibility per NCAA regulations: 2nd year of enrollment – 1.800 3rd year of enrollment – 1.900 4th year or later – 2.000 The Men’s soccer team is finalizing their out-of-season conditioning and skill instruction schedule for the remainder of the fall semester. If none of the student-athletes have final exams on Wednesday of exam week, is it permissible to conduct skill instruction sessions on that day? Answer on next page.

New Assistant Athletic Director for Compliance Hired: Outside Competition Over Winter Break During the official vacation period, if you are out-of-season, you may compete in non-collegiate, amateur competition (e.g. club team). Please be sure to fill out the Outside Competition Form in ARMS prior to competing in any events or please contact the Office of Compliance Services. New Assistant Athletic Director for Compliance Hired: Dan VanDenburgh was hired as the Assistant Athletic Director for Compliance in November 2018.   VanDenburgh came to UAlbany from Colgate University, where he served as the Compliance Assistant since September 2016. In addition to his role as the Compliance Assistant, Dan also worked in event management for the Red Raiders. VanDenburgh is a licensed attorney. He worked as an Associate Attorney for more than a year following a three-year stint as a law clerk at Napierski, VanDenburgh, Napierski and O’Connor LLP in Albany, N.Y. In the summer of 2013, VanDenburgh was a Legal Intern with the New York State Gaming Commission. VanDenburgh received his Juris Doctor (J.D.) from the Albany Law School in May 2014. He graduated from the University of Massachusetts with a Bachelor of Science in Sport Management and a minor in Economics in December 2010. Dan is currently an active member of NAAC. .
