Unit 1 – Year 11 Lesson 2 – Contemporary Dance Conflict Unit 1 – Year 11 Lesson 2 – Contemporary Dance

What do we mean when we say Contemporary Dance?

Learning Outcomes By the end of this lesson you will be able to:   Content: explore the theme of Conflict through the application of contemporary dance as a skill for expression. Process: doing this through the stimuli of music, using the drama mediums of mime, movement and gesture and the drama element of forms. Benefits: Recap on some of our previous contemporary awareness and be able to apply this to a theme or topic to demonstrate meaning and awareness.

Listen & Describe What emotions do you connect with this? How do we come to these decisions and why? Discuss what it is about this music that sparks these emotions.

Select a relationship In groups of 5 you will now use these new elements of contemporary dance coupled with your own moves and transitions to create a piece of movement that portrays your interpretation of the relationship you have chosen. In your groups discuss the possible ways this Conflict could be interpreted.

Apply to the Song You will now devise your movement sequence to ensure you meet the following success criteria. However do not be worried about this looking too ‘dancy’. We want to see how you can portray this and use dance as a tool for expression.

Success Criteria Work collaboratively to deliver a short movement piece – you should have a minimum of 1 minute’s worth of Drama; the form it takes is up to you. Think about how normal moves could become more stylised – reach, grabbing wrists etc. Remember that our body language, facial expression and gesture are heightened when we omit the use of voice and sound. Think about how certain people could symbolise different things – happiness, upset, frustration.

Show back Share your work with the class.   What was the impact of the form this performance took? What was powerful about their approach to Conflict? What could this group change to make this better? (Be specific)

Notebook review Using your Notebooks write up this session using the learning outcomes slide to structure it.  You must refer to the ways you used: Mediums Elements Stimuli

Final Thought… How can we inject contemporary dance aspects in to our performance work?
