How To Use Longitude and Latitude Why Learn This Skill?  To find the absolute location of a place on Earth’s surface.  To know the exact location of where you are.  To be able to help someone else locate a place on Earth using latitude and longitude.

How To Use Longitude and Latitude Learn It!  The latitude and longitude system creates a grid around Earth. Using this system, the absolute location of a place can be determined.  Latitude and longitude lines are measured in degrees. The symbol is ⁰.

Learn It!  Latitude lines run east to west and circle Earth. How To Use Longitude and Latitude Learn It!  Latitude lines run east to west and circle Earth.

How To Use Longitude and Latitude Learn It!  The Equator is the starting point to measure latitude. It is located at 0⁰ latitude.

How To Use Longitude and Latitude Learn It!  The Equator divides Earth into two equal parts: the Northern and Southern Hemispheres.

How To Use Longitude and Latitude Learn It!  Longitude lines run north and south. These lines do not circle Earth, though. They only run from one pole to the other.

How To Use Longitude and Latitude Learn It!  The Prime Meridian is the starting point for longitude lines. On the opposite side of Earth is 180⁰.

How To Use Longitude and Latitude Learn It!  Any position east of the Prime Meridian is in the Eastern Hemisphere.

How To Use Longitude and Latitude Learn It!  Any position east of Prime Meridian is in the Eastern Hemisphere.  Any position west of Prime Meridian is in the Western Hemisphere.

Apply It!  What capital is near 30⁰N latitude and 30⁰E longitude? How To Use Longitude and Latitude Apply It!  What capital is near 30⁰N latitude and 30⁰E longitude? Answer: Cairo, Egypt

Apply It!  Which line of longitude runs through Benghazi? How To Use Longitude and Latitude Apply It!  Which line of longitude runs through Benghazi? Answer: 20⁰E

Apply It!  What city is near 75⁰W latitude and 15⁰S longitude? How To Use Longitude and Latitude Apply It!  What city is near 75⁰W latitude and 15⁰S longitude? Answer: Lima

Apply It!  Where is Austin located? How To Use Longitude and Latitude Apply It!  Where is Austin located? Answer: 30⁰N latitude, 98⁰W longitude

Apply It!  Between what latitude lines is Rio de Janeiro located? How To Use Longitude and Latitude Apply It!  Between what latitude lines is Rio de Janeiro located? Answer: Between 15⁰S and 30⁰S

Apply It! How To Use Longitude and Latitude What are longitude and latitude? Longitude lines run north to south, and latitude lines run east to west. These lines divide Earth into a grid, making it easy to find the absolute location of a place.

How To Use Longitude and Latitude Remember  Longitude lines run north to south, dividing Earth vertically. The Prime Meridian is the starting point to measure longitude.  Latitude lines run east to west, dividing Earth horizontally. The Equator is the starting point to measure latitude.  Knowing how to use longitude and latitude can help you find the absolute location of a place.
