Archaeology and other sources (8-9) Archaeology – the scientific study of ancient cultures through the examination of artifacts and other evidence Anthropology – the study of humankind in all aspects, especially development and culture. Anthropologists seek to understand the origins of humans and the way humans developed physically. Oral tradition – a community’s cultural and historical background, passed down in spoken stories and songs.
The Historians’ Tools Primary Sources: written or created during the actual time of a historical event. Examples: Letters, diaries, videos, photos, maps, fossils, artifacts, tools.
The historians’ tools Secondary Sources: written or created after the actual time of a historical event. Examples: books, paintings, articles, media reports.
The Historians’ Tools Verbal History: stories, songs, or legends passed down between generations.
