2nd Grade Rockin’ Room 116 Mrs. Ramey

I am so glad to have you in my class this year I am so glad to have you in my class this year. I hope we can work together to make this a “Rock Star” year. This is my 14th year teaching at Foster School. It is such a pleasure to work with wonderful students, parents, and faculty. Here is a little information about me. I am a graduate of Eastern Illinois University, where I fell in love with teaching and learning. I received my masters in Curriculum and Instruction at Olivet Nazarene University. I live in New Lenox with my wonderful husband Bill. We have two sons. Will is 6 years old and Blake is a 4 years old. They are our pride and joy. We both are overjoyed by how happy and fulfilled they have made our lives.

Learning Goals Our 2nd grade curriculum and pacing guides for Reading and Math follow the Illinois Common Core State Standards Reading: 2nd Grade Reading Standards Math: 2nd Grade Math Standards Science: 2nd Grade Science Standards Social Science: 2nd Grade Social Science Standards

PBIS Positive Behavior Intervention and Support (PBIS) is a program designed to prevent and respond to classroom and school discipline issues.   PBIS helps to create and maintain safe learning environments, where teachers can teach and students an learn.   General Classroom Rules Be Respectful Be Safe Listen when someone is talking. Work and play safely and quietly Treat everyone with kindness and respect. Be Responsible Follow directions the first time they are given. Take care of our school and classroom. It's OK to make mistakes.

21st CENTURY SEATING We’ve created 21st Century Learning spaces which promotes Creativity, Collaboration, Communication, and Critical Thinking. The learning spaces are student-centered and will allow for movement throughout the day. Together with the students, expectations for the new learning spaces will be modeled, taught and reviewed.

Student Arrival 8:30-8:45 AM Class Begins 8:50 AM Class Ends 3:20 PM Gym is every day from 9:00 – 9:25 Lunch is every day from 11:40 - 12:15 Art (1st & 2nd Quarter) & Music (3rd and 4th Quarter) is on Monday & Thursday from 12:40 – 1:10 Library is on Thursday from 1:50 – 2:10 Technology is on Friday from 1:25 - 2:05

Folders - Your child will have a yellow take home/homework folder that will go to and from school with him/her everyday. In this folder you will find important notes, graded schoolwork, and homework. This folder needs to come to/from school each day. Also, please be sure to check and empty necessary items nightly! Reader’s Chair – Each student will have a chance to read to the class almost monthly and become the teacher by asking questions about his/her book. Please be sure the book chosen can be read with minimal assistance. It is important to practice this book at home with your child. It will make him/her feel more at ease while reading to the class. The book should not take more than about 10 to 15 minutes to read. A calendar will come home monthly to let you know when your child is reading. Star of the Week – Each student will get a chance to be “The Star of the Week.” A form will go home to fill out and you may make a poster with your child to share with the class.

CLASS NEWS   Every week I will have a weekly newsletter called, “Class News”, noting important subjects and activities that will be covered in class. I will email this newsletter out to parents every week. It can also be found on our class Weebly. This Weebly can be found by clicking my name located on the district website. A hard copy will go home only to those who need one. I believe that it is important to keep you, the parent, just as involved in your child’s learning as I am.

Students will be responsible for a monthly reading and math log that can be found in their fluency bag. Students are expected to read at least 20 minutes and practice math addition/subtraction facts nightly. Other homework will be given as needed. Homework will be labeled and written on the assignment notebook. It is used to reinforce material learned in school. Homework will be collected the following day unless otherwise stated.

Assignment Notebooks Have Gone Digital The Assignment Sheet will be filled out at the beginning of every school day. All homework and important information will be written on the assignment sheet. I will discuss the sheet with the students, take a picture and email it to you daily. Please be sure to check your email daily for homework every night.

Absent Student Please call the office for any student who is not going to be in attendance during the school day at 708-687-4763. Please call the office and email me about vacations a few days prior to leaving on your trip. Some homework for vacations may be given prior, but the majority will be collected while away and given to the students when they return. Absent Work All work missed while absent must be made up within a reasonable amount of time. It will not be considered late. Work will be sent to the office or sent home with another child or sibling only if requested by a parent. Supplies Please make sure students have the proper supplies for school. Replace items as quickly as possible when necessary.

Snack & Birthday Treats Students will have ONE healthy snack each day. No snacks will be provided or shared. Students may also have a water bottle with their name on it. Feel free to send a special treat (pencils, stickers, erasers etc.) with your child on his/her birthday, but it is not necessary. NO FOOD ITEMS ARE ALLOWED! (We have 24 students)

Please be sure to send a note if your child will not be riding the bus as he/she normally does. For safety reasons, a child without a note will be sent home on the bus. Please also send a note if your child is going home with someone that he/she does not normally leave with when walking or car riding.

CONTACT INFORMATION Please email me so you can be added to my parent contact group. If you are available to be a parent volunteer, please state availability in this email. If you have any questions please do not hesitate to contact me by note, phone call, or e-mail. I can be reached at 687-4763 Ext. 5316 or Lramey@d142.org.
