Council of Trent

Background The Council of Trent was a series of meetings between Catholics 1545-1563 Trent is a city in the Italian Peninsula Pope Paul III realized that the Protestant Reformation was spreading, so he helped organize these meetings This is part of the Counter-Reformation

Protestants were invited but could not vote on issues They stopped attending by 1552 The Council of Trent was made up of three distinct periods 1545-1549 1551-1552 1562-1563

Purpose and Results Condemn principles of Protestantism Define Catholic teachings The Catholic interpretation of the Bible was final

Salvation was achieved through faith and good deeds A Pope can grant indulgences, but economic aspect phased out Latin was the universal language for worship

Indulgence An indulgence granted by authority of the Pope by Johann Tetzel in 1517. The text reads: "By the authority of all the saints, and in mercy towards you, I absolve you from all sins and misdeeds and remit all punishments for ten days."
