Seating Chart/ Roll Please arrange yourselves in alphabetical order by FIRST NAME. The names that begin with A should begin by the door. You have 3:34 minutes: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v =aLge6vnP6kU

Community Definition of community (noun): 1. a group of people living in the same place or having a particular characteristic in common. Ex: "Rhode Island's Japanese community” 2. a feeling of fellowship with others, as a result of sharing common attitudes, interests, and goals. Ex: "the sense of community that organized religion can provide” Whether you may have been going to school with your classmates for years or this is your first year at PVHS, we will establish a distinctive, inclusive COMMUNITY within this classroom. In order to foster “a feeling of fellowship with others” I expect you to be open-minded about meeting new people. This is your senior year. Keep making new friends! I asked you to arrange yourselves by first name as a first step in developing our classroom community.

Expectations Respect Diligence Class Discussions/ Community Integrity We commit to respect each other. Diligence I will prepare lessons to help you access the material. I will use a variety of learning strategies. I expect you to work diligently in every class. Class Discussions/ Community Raise your hand. Listen to others. I will not talk over you. Equity cards will involve everyone. Pay attention. Integrity Do not cheat. Treat others as you wish to be treated.

Equity Cards – fill out the lined side of the note card First and Last Name (please write the name you want me to use in the classroom) Type of learner: visual, auditory, or kinetic ? Mix? Your favorite book. (Or movie if you aren’t a huge fan of reading) Your hobbies. What do you do outside of school?

Summer Reading: 1- Warriors Don’t Cry 2- Slaughterhouse-Five You were assigned two books to read over the summer. You will take a 25-question multiple choice test on Slaughterhouse-Five on Sept 5/ 6 (the day after Labor Day). We will spend two & half weeks on Warriors Don’t Cry. You will write an essay based on Warriors Don’t Cry (due Sept. 13/ 14)

Warriors Don’t Cry Overview DUE 8/29 & 8/30- Chapters 1-8 Topics for discussion: Segregation/ Becoming a Warrior DUE 8/31 & 9/1- Chapters 7-12 Topics for discussion: Inside Central High/ Desegregation DUE 9/5 & 9/6- Chapters 13-19 Topics for discussion: Harassment & Legacies NOTE: Slaughterhouse-Five TEST DUE 9/13 & 9/14- Essay due CENTRAL QUESTION: What can we do alone and with others to confront racism? How can we as individuals and as citizens make a positive difference in our school, community, & nations.

Switching Classes I teach the following periods: P1 P2 P3 P5 P6 My assigned planning period is P4 so many of you will have to take an afternoon class. I cannot change my planning period because it is established by administration by departments.

Substitutes Since I diligently plan every class session & strive to make it worth your while to come to school, I expect FULL cooperation with any substitutes. When I have a substitute, it is NOT a “free day”. I will expect my substitute to follow my lesson plans so that we do not fall behind. For example, my husband is having surgery tomorrow, so I will have a substitute tomorrow. As the P1, P2, & P3 class, we still need to cover the Day One lesson plans. Failure to cooperate with a substitute (even a “bad” substitute!) will result in a loss of participation points. (Not to mention you will now become behind in the class). I will continue to follow my lesson plan that is posted on the PVHS website.

My Contact Information Mrs. Bly blyt@pvpusd.net Room 323 Phone: (310) 378-8471 X623 I use www.turnitin.com I use Edlio (our school website) to post all assignments. End of Class Bell doesn’t dismiss you. I do. Please don’t pack up early. It’s rude. “Would you rather….” until dismissal.
