What is year 1 all about? Promoting confidence and self belief within our own abilities. Developing structures. Fun & creativity! Preparation for End of year Phonics Test.

Phonics in year 1 Taught daily in small groups. Rapid & fast pace. Aim to work within Phase 5 Letters & Sounds. End of Year Phonics Assessment for all. Weekly spellings will be based on the phonics sounds from that week.

Reading in Year 1 Currently all children heard 1:1 weekly. Guided Reading will begin this term. Comprehension & questioning. Highlight high frequency / tricky words when reading. Focus on target phonic sounds. Modelled, shared and independent reading. Daily story time.

Handwriting in year 1 Cursive Letter families Taught daily as whole class Weekly in smaller groups if needed Entry and exit stroke Working towards joining with cursive in Year Two

Other information Weekly spellings given out on a Friday and tested on the following Friday. PE days will be on a Monday and a Thursday – please ensure PE kits are in school. We will send home at the end of each half term to be washed! Home work for year 1 is reading and spellings. Please read with your child as regularly as possible! Ideally every night.
