Writing Prompt (1.3) Describe a time when you challenged authority. Describe the events that led you to challenge that person’s authority. How did the authority figure respond? OR Describe a time you witnessed somebody challenging authority. Why do you think they took the actions that they did? What was the result?

Ideas of the American Revolution

I. Enlightenment and Great Awakening. A. The Enlightenment was an intellectual movement that began in Europe and spread throughout the colonies -Scientific method and inquiry B. Great Awakening- A religious revival. -People questioned their religious leaders and found new churches.

II. The French and Indian War France and Native Americans against British.

B. The British won the war and claimed most of North America, East of the Mississippi. C. To avoid further costly conflicts with Native Americans, the British government prohibited colonist from settling west of the Appalachian Mountains in the proclamation of 1763.

C. How Will England pay for the war? The Stamp Act- Requires that all documents have a stamp to prove a tax was paid for. The colonists felt that Parliament did not have the right to tax the colonies because the colonies were not represented. The colonist responded by boycotting British goods.

III. Declaration of Independence Establishes that all men have inalienable rights. Lists grievances against King George. Breakaway Statement.

IV. Articles of Confederation The first constitution, it gave most of the power to the states. Federal government had few powers. -No Power to tax.

Shays’ Rebellion An armed uprising in Massachusetts. Federal government had no power to put it down. A convention was called to write a new constitution.
