Introduction to ser Ser = to be

Los bÁsicos A conjugation is the way a verb is changed from its infinitive form according to the subject An infinitive is the original form of a verb por ejemplo: ser = to be (has no subject, so it is in the original form)

Los bÁsicos Ser is an irregular verb Its conjugations do not follow a pattern like most other verbs You will need to memorize the forms in the chart and their meanings

Uses of ser Ser is used to identify people and things ¿QuiÉn es Él? (Who is he?) Es Felipe dÍaz aguilar. (He is Felipe dÍaz aguilar.) ¿QuÉ es? (What is it?) Es un mapa de espaÑa. (It’s a map of spain.)

Uses of ser Ser also expresses possession with the preposition de In Spanish, there is no way to say Marissa’s Spanish uses [Noun] + de + [owner]  el mapa de Pablo (Pablo’s map)

Uses of ser When de is followed by the article el, the two combine to form the contraction del. De does not contract with la, las, or los.

Uses of ser Unlike English, Spanish does not use the indefinite article (un, una) after ser when referring to professions, unless accompanied by an adjective (description).
