What are we beginning today?

Essay Analytical essay: how visual codes and conventions construct one character in The Goonies. Present ideas about the character.

What is an essay? A formal piece of writing. It allows you to present your ideas on a topic in a structured way. It can be analytical, opinionative or persuasive.

To examine something in detail in order to interpret and explain it. = Taking the movie apart piece by piece. http://blog.fauske.com/hs-fs/hub/232514/file-377300403-jpg/images/analysis.jpg

Why do we write essays? They are the most organised and formal way to present your ideas. They follow a particular structure. This means that you can demonstrate your ability to discuss a topic in an equally structured way.

Example Introduction Introduction: Global statement/hook sentence 2. Focusing sentences. 3. Thesis statement Example Introduction Introduce your character and your argument. e.g. The 1985 American film, The Goonies, is a classic family adventure that follows a group of teenagers on their quest to save their homes from demolition. Twelve-year old Chunk is a member of the group called the ‘Goonies’, and reluctantly follows his friends to search for hidden treasure. Chunk is a fast-food loving adolescent and chronic liar who provides the comic relief for the film. This representation of Chunk is supported through camera work, sound and lighting film codes. Moreover, Chunk is constructed as a teenager with a tendency to lie, a big appetite and sense of humour.

Body Paragraphs TEXT T. Topic - The topic of this paragraph - First code E. Explain – Go into further detail about how the code is used. X. Evidence & examples - Proof with quotes and scenes; explain the effect of the code. T. Tieback - Refer back to essay topic

Topic Explain Tieback EXample Body Paragraph 1 Camera work is used in The Goonies to construct Chunk as teenager who values junk food. The medium-shot film technique is employed to emphasise his eating habits and the joy he finds in consuming unhealthy snacks and meals. For example, in the opening scene, a medium-shot is used to introduce Chunk. This enables the viewer to see that he is holding a piece of pizza and a can of diet pepsi. Medium shots are also used throughout the movie so that viewers can see the variety of food items he comes into contact with, as well as his happy facial expressions in these scenes. Some examples of fast-food items include: whipped cream, ice-cream, an American chocolate bar and pizza. This indicates that fast food plays a dominant role in Chunk’s life. Overall, camera work helps to represent Chunk as someone who finds comfort, joy and value in unhealthy food. Topic Explain EXample Tieback
