“The Japanese Invasion” China World War II “The Japanese Invasion”

Background China was very weak. Multinational states had interests and a long history of trade through the late 19th and early 20th Centuries. Japan began western involvement with American Intervention along the lines of US Navy and business interests. (trade)

Japan Context Opened by force to Western trade Japan learned quickly The Prussia of Asia, Japanese culture presupposed racial superiority and created a nation state dedicated to that purpose and reality. Japan proceeded to create an industrialized state that emulated those of Western Europe and America.

Japan Context 2 On the path to modernity Japan developed essential institutions to compete on a global scale They were very adept at emulating and improving on Western concepts. Political- highbred system of Constitutional Monarchy with a Divine Emperor and parliamentary system with parties Above all loyalty to the Emperor which was characteristic of the Ancien Regime

Japan Context 3 Economic- Japan created economic institutions of a stock market, corporations, traditional capitalism, manufacturing, naval facilities… Educational facilities, many Japanese Bourgeoisie went to the United States for university education. Copied the British Navy Copied the French and German Army tactics Copied American industrial efficiency of Taylorism and Ford Copied Imperial organization and practices of the British

By the 20th Century Japan soon began to challenge European powers’ for control of Asia. Japan wanted an empire equivalent to Britain, France, Italy, Germany, and the United States They proceeded to scan the landscape and asserted leadership and hegemony over Asia. Japan justifiably challenged Russian encroachment into Asia and had an eye on the future.

Russo Japanese War Japan provoked a Russian response over hegemony on the Korean Peninsula Imperial Russia wanted a Warm Water Port and was infiltrating into the Eastern Pacific at Port Arthur and beyond to the Korean Peninsula. Vladivostok was not navigable in the winter.
