Its nickname is the Banana Republic because it grows and exports a lot of bananas. Honduras was originally known as Higüeras, the name of a native plant. The country's cuisine is based around beans, rice, tortillas, fried bananas, meat, potatoes, cream and cheese.
Honduran breakfast foods include fried beans, eggs, cheese and fried bananas. Portions are smaller at supper, which is a lighter meal. Small towns may have a traditional healer who prescribes herbal treatments. Girls are expected to be quiet and helpful; boys enjoy much greater freedom.
