KENNICUTT-SCHMIDT RELATION VARIETY AND STAR-FORMING CLOUD FRACTION (arXiv:1702.04820v1) 胡 宁 02.23

1. Kennicutt-Schmidt (KS) relation various normalizations and slopes based on molcular gas Higher normalizations for starbursts (Daddi et al. 2010) Smaller normalizations for early-type galaxies compared to normal disk galaxies (Martig et al. 2013) various slopes reported for normal disk galaxies

2. DATA 3 galaxies: NGC3627, M83, NGC5055

Gas surface density CO(3-2) data: CO(1-0) data: 45 m telescope (Nobeyama CO Atlas survey, Kuno et al. 2007) Conversion factor HI data: Very Large Array (VLA) (The HI Nearby Galaxy Survey ,THINGS, Walter et al. 2008) CO(3-2) data: the Atacama Submillimeter Telescope Experiment (ASTE) telescope for M 83 the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope (JCMT) for NGC 3627 and NGC 5055

Integrated intensity CO(3-2)/CO(1-0) ratio R31 SFR surfance density Ha and 24 μm data from SIRTF Nearby Galaxies Survey (SINGS, Kennicutt et al. 2003) and Spitzer Local Volume Legacy (LVL, Dale et al. 2009)

3. Results

The slopes of the KS relations for each sub-sample of R31 are shallower than that obtained when fitting to all data concurrently.

4. Hierarchical KS relation The hierarchy in the ISM within a galaxy Cores that make up the material of stars in which the mass of the core correlates linearly with SFR, clumps, molecular clouds and diffuse atomic gas Some studies also suggested the existence of substantial amounts of volume-filling molecules or diffuse small clouds traced by CO(1-0) in Galactic sources

Atomic gas  Molecular gas  Molecular clouds  Dense cores  stars hierarchical KS relation: fcore = Σcore /ΣSF,cloud fSF,cloud = ΣSF,cloud/Σcloud fcloud = Σcloud/Σmol fmol = Σmol /Σgas the linear relation of SFR-CO(3-2) in this study as well as previous studies suggests a constant fcore

If we assume that CO(1-0) and CO(3-2) emissions respectively trace total molecular gas and star-forming molecular clouds, the R31 value is a measure of a ratio of ΣSF,cloud/ Σmol , which corresponds to a product of fSF,cloud and f cloud fcloud ~ 0.5 however there is a variety as a function of galactic structure Studies suggest that fSF,cloud has a variety among galaxies

The major differences between the high-gas galaxies (NGC 3627 and M 83) and low-gas galaxy (NGC 5055) in our sample is the existence of galactic-scale structures such as spiral arms and bars: NGC 3627 and M 83 are classified as barred-spiral galaxies with grand design spirals whereas NGC 5055 is a spiral galaxy with flocculent spiral arms

5. Summary The slopes for the KS relations of the samples sub-divided by R31 are shallower than that for all of the datasets combined. The normalizations for high R31 samples tend to be higher than those for the low-R31 counterparts. The KS-relation slopes change according to the distribution in R31 - Σgas space of the plotted samples; no Σgas dependence of R31 results in a linear slope of the KS-relation whereas a positive correlation results in a super-linear slope of the KS-relation.

The R31 -Σgas distribution is different from galaxy to galaxy as well as within a galaxy. High gas and R31 are found at the central and the bar-end regions suggesting that galactic structures (dynamics) play a role in determining the galactic KS relation.
