Carver County Sheriff’s Office WHAT IS TRIAD?

SO WHAT IS THIS TRIAD I KEEP HEARING ABOUT? TRIAD is a partnership between law enforcement, the public and the senior citizen community all working together to protect our senior citizens. TRIAD The sole purpose of Triad is to promote senior safety and to reduce the fear of crime that seniors often experience.

A LITTLE TRIAD HISTORY Triad was first conceived at the genesis of the community policing movement in law enforcement in the 1980s. In 1988, representatives from the American Association of Retired Persons (now AARP), the International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP), and the National Sheriffs’ Association (NSA) came together to attempt to define a way to help keep seniors safe from crime. The Triad model emerged from that effort.

The 1st TRIAD agreement was signed in St Martin Parish, Louisiana in 1988. By the early 2000’s, more than 800 counties had signed TRIAD agreements. In 2012, Sheriff Jim Olson tasked Lieutenant David M. Williams with forming our own TRIAD program. After meetings and organizational changes Carver County Sheriff’s Office partnered with Carver County Public Health to form our TRIAD Program.

Who Is TRIAD? Senior Citizens who want to: Law Enforcement Community Make a difference Help others Contribute to a worthwhile purpose Be part of a group of caring individuals Protect their peers Law Enforcement Community

So what does carver county triad do? We EDUCATE: By providing crime prevention and public education materials for older adults. ASSIST: By providing assistance at senior citizen events such as carfit, medicine take back events, senior expo, etc. SUPPORT: By identifying community resources and providing referrals to older persons to help reduce fear and lend moral support and providing communication to our senior citizen community. UNITE: By involving seniors, law enforcement, community agencies and individuals to identify problem areas in their communities.

How does TRIAD work? We established a SALT (Seniors and Law Enforcement Together) Advisory Committee which consists of 2 representatives from each of the 6 senior committees in Carver County. They are: Chanhassen Victoria Waconia Norwood-Young America Watertown Mayer

The SALT Committee helps provide a connection to the senior community and are the advisors for the TRIAD Program. The SALT and Sheriff’s Office work with the senior community through a network of senior citizens contacts to promote and provide assistance for the various programs offered by the senior community.

It is through this partnership that we can communicate and work with the senior citizens in our county. Examples of our joint projects are: senior safety brochures, presentations by the town cops, safety fairs, carfit programs, the medicine take back program, senior expo and safety press releases.

Why do we need TRIAD? Older Americans comprise the most rapidly growing segment of the population. One in every eight Americans is already age 65 or older. Increased life expectancy is leading to new issues and problems for the criminal justice system. Most communities are experiencing a dramatic increase in the number of older persons, thus increasing crime against the elderly and frauds and scams targeted for seniors. Thieves and scam artists are preying on our senior citizens by taking advantage of their kind-heartedness and vulnerabilities. Triads work together to devise a better way to reduce crimes and scams against senior citizens and enhance services and communications between older citizens and law enforcement.

How can we support TRIAD? Attend your local senior events and activities. Participate in carfit, medicine take back and other events. Be a good neighbor and report suspicious activity right away. Use 911. Check on your neighbors. Ask your local town deputy to conduct a senior safety presentation for your group. Be safe.
