Presentation transcript:

1st Grade Amazing Earth January Force and Motion Presentation should take about 15 minutes to allow ample time for the experiments. Please keep an eye on the clock as the kids love the hands-on activities. Ask students to sit on the carpet so the activities can be set up. You may have to limit questions or the number of students who can answer a question if time runs short.   Ask helpers to: familiarize themselves with the activities and goals set up during the presentation decide what station/role they are covering rotate stations about every 5-7 minutes. Thank you for making Amazing Earth possible! 1st Grade Amazing Earth January

What is a force? A force is a push or pull It happens all around us all the time ASK: what is a force? CLICK to advance the bullet points

What is motion? Motion is moving from one place to another Motion is caused by force ASK: what is motion? CLICK to advance bullet points Push the swing and the swing moves Pull the wagon and the wagon moves

What happens when an object is pushed or pulled? Pushes and pulls (force) have different strengths and can change speed and direction. Force can: Start or stop motion Speed motion up or slow motion down Change the direction of the motion ASK: what happens to an object when you push or pull it? If they need prompting, ASK: what happens when you pedal your bike? What happens when you kick a ball? Kicking the ball changes the direction of the ball’s motion A bigger push or pull makes things speed up or slow down more quickly

Types of forces that set an object in motion An object can be set in motion by forces that come from: Gravity is pulling an object down toward the Earth. Direct Contact Moving Air Magnets Gravity

That’s friction slowing you down! Friction slows down moving objects! Can you walk faster in the pool or on the street? Do you ski (or sled) faster on snow or on grass? That’s friction slowing you down! Optional description. In depth review of friction is not advised. Friction is force that works in the opposite direction When you’re trying to push through the water and the water is pushing back

Some ways objects move Straight Spin Back and forth And many more! SAY: Things can move in many ways. Can you think of some ways objects move? (can prompt by asking about specific items like a top or ball if needed) CLICK to advance to the pictures Straight Spin Back and forth And many more!

Force and Motion Science Stations Four groups rotate through four stations: Station 1: Move the metal ball Station 2: Friction, it’s always slowing me down! Station 3: Build and fly paper airplanes Station 4: Ways toys move Updated 12/12/18
