Retaining Information Memory Retaining Information

3 types of memories that are stored: Sensory Short-term Long-term Let’s go through each of these, shall we?

1. Sensory Memory Immediate, initial recording of sensory information into memory You can still remember details no matter how quickly image is flashed Iconic memory: being able to visualize in your mind what you’ve just seen. Photographic memory: long iconic memory = eidetic imagery

Do you have a photographic memory?

Draw what you can remember! Details count!!

Sensory Memory Continued… Echoic memory- memory for auditory sensory images Acoustic memory- sounds

2. Short-term Memory Information comes from sensory memory or brought back from long-term memory Remember an average of 7 items on a list A friend’s phone number Memories decay without rehearsal

How many items can YOU remember? Listen to what I say FIRST, and then write down the numbers you remember IN ORDER! Ready….. Recall!

3. Long-Term Memory Contains memories from hours to decades! Average adult has over a billion bits of information in memory with a lot of room to spare.

The story of Rajan Mahadevan Kansas State University Remember 31,811 digits of pi (3.14…)

Where is memory stored? More impressive than we think Experiments on rats? Rats able to solve a maze. Removed different pieces of brain to see where the memory of the maze was stored. Hamster knew where food was in a maze so froze him so his brain stopped working. Then, warmed it up again and he still knew! Conclusion? Memories are NOT stored in a specific place in the brain

Savant Syndrome Person who is otherwise limited in mental ability, has an exceptional specific skill Musical memory, computation, drawing…etc Rain Man The Real Rain Man - Kim Peek
