Imperialism- Importance- End of the 1800’s the US starts to become a world power and extend it’s control beyond North America Objective- students will understand reasons why the US gets involved in the affairs of other countries ?Why do you feel countries want to take over other countries?

Imperialism- when a stronger country takes over a weaker country Europe in 1800’s- taken over almost all of Africa and much of Asia to supply natural resources for the industries and create new markets to sell their products IE- England controlled ¼ of the world’s land mass ?Why is the US left off this map?

American Imperilaism- after taking over the west (Manifest Destiny), Us looked overseas to take more land Reasons to Expand (3) 1) Create new Markets- us made more goods than it could buy, sell extra goods overseas ?What American products today are sold around the world?

2) Establish Military Presence- US did not want to fall behind European countries Alfred T Mahan- create a steel navy to protect US goods abroad Today- US strongest country in World 12 aircraft carriers B-2 bombers ICBM- nuclear missles Us troops abroad Afghan- 120,000 South korea- 36,000 Japan- 39,000 Germany- 45,000

3) Anglo- Saxon Supremacy- Americans want to spread Christianity and civilize “inferior people” Does the US still try and “Civilize” people? How might this lead to problems? Manifest Destiny- God given right to expand the nation across continent ?How does this philosophy change w. imperialism
