5 minutes DISCUSSION Looking at this piece of work by Julian Opie, in groups of 3 or 4, discuss the following: How has Opie recorded the facial features. Has Opie used tone successfully on this portrait? Is colour important here?

REVIEW PREVIEW What activities did you do last lesson? What skills, knowledge or understanding did you learn? Consider what skills you would like to develop this lesson through the following activities PREVIEW 2

Learning Objectives You will: What I’m looking for… Learn to give and receive peer feedback. Learn to recreate a line drawing self-portrait in the style of Julian Opie. Learn to create different colour design plans ready for your Photoshop outcome. What I’m looking for… You are able to offer and to receive improvement advice. You have a clear understanding about the work of Julian Opie and how he renders the facial features and tone in his work. You gain an ability to generate 3 different colour schemes in preparation for the Photoshop piece you will make later.

5 minutes Before doing some FINAL REFINEMENT on your line self-portrait, look at the portraits of your peers on your table and discuss ways in which they could be further developed or improved. Is everything in the correct position? Are proportions correct? Has hair been done with lots of fine, individual lines? 4

Using the feedback which you have received from your peers, make any final adjustments to your line portrait. 10 minutes 5

Following the discussion in the connect activity, you will now use your line drawing to create an Opie-style portrait. 15 minutes 2) Put a sheet of tracing paper over your line drawing and in pencil, sketch out an outline around everything. 3) Remember to use large dots for your eyes, small dashes for your nostrils and 2 lines for the centre and bottom of you mouth. 4) Afterwards, take a black Berol felt pen from the side of the room and carefully go over the lines of your portrait…TRY NOT TO SMUDGE IT WITH YOUR HAND! 6

Put your name in the top left corner 15 minutes Put your name in the top left corner Put your form in the top right corner When you have finished, take it to the teacher to receive 3 small scale photocopies of it. Cut these out. 7

Glue your 3 small photocopies into your sketchbook. 15 minutes Glue your 3 small photocopies into your sketchbook. Think about the different colour schemes you could use for your final Photoshop piece. Try these colour schemes out on your 3 photocopies to create 3 design ideas. 8
