iNTRODUCTIONS AND CONCLUSIONS Ms. De La O English 9

The 3 Elements of the Introduction The General Statement of Subject The Thesis The “Method Statement”

The General Statement of Subject DO NOT INCLUDE A HOOK! The paper’s specific subject Based on the prompt Includes TAG The hook for the reader is simply setting up a specific enough subject that we ask “so what will you show us about this” TAF: Title Author and focus of work

Clear and straightforward about what the paper will support The Thesis The overall claim Clear and straightforward about what the paper will support Formula: Who +does what +how OR so what A good thesis does not use the same language as any one topic sentence, but coheres with all of them

The “Method Statement” The road map Lists the main ideas of each paragraph Do not list ideas but FRAME the ideas Clarifies the subjects of each paragraph in the same order as will be presented in the paper Should not use the same words as a topic sentence

Building the thesis and method statement Show  Tell Method Topic: Although teenagers, the boy and the girl are too immature to form a relationship with one another. Show: Method Statement Tell: Thesis Show tell similar to cause and effect

LETS PRACTICE!!!

The 3 Elements of the Conclusion Restate thesis Why is the thesis important to the topic Why should the reader care

Restating the thesis DONT SAY "in conclusion,..." " Throughout the novel, then, ..." "Overall," “in general, “ Keep the same idea but RESTATE it with new words Combine the condensed version of your thesis with a simplified method statement keep the same order of 3 What you “showed” or similar phrase so that the reader actually knows that it’s a conclusion, not another body paragraph.

Why is the thesis important to the topic Share the importance to the subject/ character/ or issue ASK: How is this claim important to my subject? THINK: What is the effect of what happened?

Why should the reader care What is the connection to the real world Keep in third person “One” “Readers”
