What problems did women have in the 1930s? MASS MALE UNEMPLOYMENT AS A CONSEQUENCE OF THE WALL STREET CRASH. ( UP TO 3 MILLION IN 1932) UNEMLPOYMENT PAY PAID FOR 26 WEEKS, THEN THE MEANS TEST DETERMINED HOW MUCH DOLE A HOUSEHOLD RECEIVED. MANY WOMEN MADE GREAT SACRIFICES TO KEEP THEIR FAMILY GOING, SUCH AS STARVING THEMSELVES IF THERE WAS NOT ENOUGH FOOD TO GO AROUND. MANY EMPLOYERS WOULD ONLY EMPLOY WOMEN AS THEY WERE NOT UNIONISED AND SO WERE CHEAPER TO EMPLOY. IN THE SOUTH, SEMI DETACHED AREAS

MEN ON FRONTLINES WERE MEN ON DOLE After the horrors of World War Two, the country went through a series of dramatic changes. See if you can identify why World War Two led to changes in society. SPOT THE DIFFERENCE! Post war housing Pre war housing

After World War Two, great efforts were made to improve the quality of life for the British people. Can you name one that we looked at last lesson? Today we will be investigating changes made to housing after in the 1950s and 1960s. 11

Why were improvements in housing made after World War Two? Why did I think that housing needed to change after the war. (Think back to your lesson on women in poorer areas) Why were improvements in housing made after World War Two? Complete the gap fill exercise to describe changes. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1DYXfP4JJhg 12

Since the end of the Second World War housing standards have improved greatly. The “Slum Clearance” programs of the 1940s and 1950s knocked down many of the old, run-down terraces that had been built during the Victorian period. Although these houses were simple and had no modern conveniences, they were well loved homes and the owners often moved out under protest. They were replaced with new houses, often built on large housing estates, or pre-fabricated houses that were built quickly and cheaply. Other people were not so lucky and ended up in high-rise tower blocks where people lost their sense of identity. These new houses all had new amenities as well, such as piped gas, piped water and central heating, all of which came with the added responsibility of increased bills and higher rents.

Now self assess your work! By the end of this lesson... ALL OF US will be able to identify ways in which womens’ lives improved during this period. (E-D) EVEN BETTER IF you can explain how these changes affected the role of women. (C-B) EXCELLENT IF you can judge the significance of these changes. (A-A*)
