Looking Inside Cells

What are Organelles? Organelle  ‘little organs’ The parts of the cell Each part of the cell has its own function (job) If one cell part is not functioning then the entire cell could die

Cell Wall Only in PLANT & BACTERIA cells Hard layer of non- living material found outside the cell Function: protect the organelles inside and support the shape of the cell

Cell Membrane Found in ALL cells Function: Protects the cell / acts like a barrier to invaders trying to enter the cell

Nucleus Found in PLANT & ANIMAL cells Like the “brain” of the cell Found in the center of the cell FUNCTION: control everything that is happening inside the cell

Ribosomes Found in ALL cells Located on the E.R. and throughout the cell FUNCTION: to make protein

Mitochondrion Found in PLANT & ANIMAL cells Located in the cytoplasm of the cell Function: change energy from food into usable energy for the cell

Lysosomes Found in ANIMAL cells Located in the cytoplasm of the cell FUNCTION: cleans up the cell…uses chemicals to break down food and other materials

Golgi Bodies Found in PLANT & ANIMAL cells Right next to the E.R. FUNCTION: to package up the protein & ship it to other parts of the cell

Endoplasmic Reticulum Found in PLANT & ANIMAL cells Right next to the nucleus FUNCTION: to carry protein to other parts of the cell

Chloroplasts Found in PLANT and some BACTERIAL cells Located in the cytoplasm of the cell FUNCTION: capture Energy from the sun and changes it into food for the plant (where photosynthesis takes place)

Cytoplasm Found in ALL cells Located throughout the entire cell Thick gel-like fluid (salt-water with other nutrients) FUNCTION: to hold organelles in their place

Vacuoles Found in PLANT cells & some ANIMAL cells Located in the cytoplasm of the cell FUNCTION: stores food, waste, water and other materials for the cell

Chromatin Found in ALL cells Inside the nucleus FUNCTION: provide genetic information
