Social Issues Response Must be done by the end of class today. Respond to the social issues we discussed last class. State your thesis. Support your thesis with opinion & evidence. Provide a solution/compromise for your call to action.

Today we will… Understand theme. Differentiate between theme and big idea. Read a short story and identify the theme and big idea.

What’s The Big Idea? (And the Main Idea? And The Theme?) Main Idea: Summary of the text. The general gist of what is going on. Big Idea: One word that explains the idea of the text. Theme: Takes the one word from big idea and explains the universal message of the story.

Quick Review! What are the 6 parts to the plot diagram? Exposition Initiating Event Rising Action Climax Falling Action Resolution 2. In which part of the plot diagram does conflict occur for the main character?

BIG IDEA: the overall idea; typically one to two words (Examples: Love, Prejudice, Revenge, Circle of life, Fear, Jealousy) THEME: the universal message or truth about life that explains the big idea A theme is not a word, it is a sentence. Theme is what the story teaches readers.

Finding the Theme Writers often express theme through what their characters learn. Does the main character change? Does a character realize something he or she did not know before?

Steps to identifying theme Step 1: Identify the conflict. Step 2: Identify the resolution. Step 3: State the universal message in a sentence.

Finding the Theme Conflict helps reveal theme. What is the conflict, or struggle between opposing forces, that the main character faces? How is the conflict resolved?       Conflict Resolution Theme Two friends find a wallet. One friend wants to return it to the owner; the other wants to keep it. They return the wallet and share a small reward. People are often rewarded for making the right moral decision.

Individual vs. Individual occurs when two (or more) characters in a story have a disagreement. Physical or Verbal.

Individual vs. Nature occurs when a character struggles to fight against problems caused by elements of his/her environment. EX: weather, animals, plants, etc.

Individual vs. Self occurs when a character in a story has a problem that is going on inside of them. Ex: opposite thoughts, feelings or positions in the character’s mind. Should I do homework? Should I finish my video game?

Individual vs. Society When a character goes against the norms of society

Individual vs. Supernatural Conflict with something that exists outside the natural world EX: zombies, aliens, ghosts, etc.

Individual vs. Technology Character struggles with something that is man made EX: computers, robots, etc.

Conflict Example THINK : Can you think of an example of Character Conflict from a previous book you have read? PAIR: Turn to your table and discuss the examples you remember from your previously read books. SHARE: Share with the class, what do you remember?
