Liquid “Armor” on Kevlar By: Dhwani Patel MEEN 3344 9-9:50

Problem Current bulletproof vests only protect around the chest area while rest of the body is an open target. Many soldiers are injured during war. There were 18,356 injuries in the current war with Iraq as of June 11, 2006

Solution Scientist came up with something called “liquid armor” Liquid armor is a type of liquid which stiffens when agitated to prevent anything from penetrating. A thin layer of this liquid is designed to be enclosed in clothes to prevent bullets and other fragments from injuring a person.

Making liquid armor The liquid is formed from a mixture of nanoparticles, non evaporating liquid. Kevlar and other ballistic materials are treated with liquid armor to strengthen the liquid when agitated.

How liquid armor works “liquid armor” acts as a liquid under normal conditions, but when a particle impacts the liquid suddenly it tenses which will not let particles to penetrate the surface. This new material has been tested to stop bullet and sharp objects at a close range. When an object strikes the liquid, the impact is distributed over a large area causing the object to slowdown.
