Everything’s An Argument Ch. 20 Using Sources The rest of the week, we will be using computers. If you’d like to bring your own, feel free! Test the Wi-Fi before you come to class with your own device!

What are we going to do today? We will practice the skills you read about in Ch. 20. This chapter is a wealth of practical information for navigating the sources you’ve chosen for a research project and for writing research papers. READ IT IF YOU HAVEN’T ALREADY. We will basically be following activities 1-4 at the end of the chapter starting on p. 453, but I will have more specific parameters than what is given in the textbook. Make sure to read both directions (in text and on slide). All of the activities will be timed, and expect to trade and give feedback among your peers.

Activity 1 Paraphrasing 25 minutes

Activity 1– 25 minutes Paraphrase “A Whisper of AIDS” Use the paraphrasing section in Ch. 20 to help you. Work individually for 20 minutes Trade, read, and give feedback for 5 minutes What is the difference between summary, paraphrase, and analysis? When would you use paraphrase? Finish for homework due (and will be turned in) tomorrow!

Activity 2 Summarizing 15 minutes

Activity 2– 15 minutes Work individually for 10 minutes This is how you would create an MLA documentation for each chapter (from Purdue OWL): Cite As A Work in an Anthology, Reference, or Collection Works may include an essay in an edited collection or anthology, or a chapter of a book. The basic form is for this sort of citation is as follows: Last name, First name. "Title of Essay." Title of Collection, edited by Editor's Name(s), Publisher, Year, Page range of entry. These are quick summaries! Reference the summarizing section of Ch. 20 Be prepared for your instructor to ask you to share yours. (5 minutes) Activity 2– 15 minutes Summarize chapters 17, 18, and 19

Activities 3-4 Choosing Quotes Identifying Kinds of Sources 30 minutes (finish Tuesday)

You and your group should decide upon ONE of the following articles to read (eventually all will be read later in the course, so choosing the shortest here is not actually helpful). Choose the TITLE that is most interesting to you all: p. 180 “What the Numbers Show about N.F.L. Player Arrests” p. 208 “Friending: the Changing Definition of Friendship in the Social Media Era” p. 237 “My Awkward Week with Google Glass” p. 268 “Can a Playground Be Too Safe?” p. 303 “Let’s Charge Politicians for Wasting Our Time” Read directions for #3-4 on p. 454 Read the article silently, making notes as you go.
