Monday, February 11, 2019 Learning Target: I can apply planning and organization to ensure purpose and audience are addressed in my writing. I can correctly cite my evidence using MLA guidelines When you receive your outline, take the time to read what you wrote on Friday. Does it follow the organizational outline? Does it address the topic? Does it explain the topic? (purpose) Am I thinking about my audience? Time to write!  Use the example for the 1st one you write—then put it away. Remember: all writing happens here; however, you may certainly think about the writing outside of class. M,T,TH 8:15 (should not be used because of daydreaming…)

First, advertisers play a role in the lives of youth by using advertising techniques to influence what they buy. One example comes from the documentary Consuming Kids: The Commercialization of Childhood in which Juliet Schor, Ph.D. explains that “Companies have moved away from exaggerating the product characteristics to a whole new form of advertising which is symbolic advertising. The product is pushed not on the basis of what it can do or how it tastes, but of its social meaning” (Barbaro and Earp). In essence, marketers are using the transfer technique to get children to associate a feeling with the product. By doing so, advertisers influence children and teens to buy products based on an emotional appeal. Furthermore, according to The Center for a New American Dream in “Facts About Marketing to Children,” “Nearly a third of [children] surveyed (32%) admitted to feeling pressure to buy certain products such as clothes and CDs because their friends have them” (94). In this example, advertisers are relying on teens’ desire to fit in with their peers. This is otherwise known as the bandwagon technique, and it is an effective tool for marketing products to youth. Overall, advertisers play a significant role in the lives of youth by using techniques designed to impact the purchasing decisions of children and teenagers.
