The Israel Matz Institute for Jewish Law was established in 1963 by Prof. Menachem Elon, who was later appointed as deputy to the President of the Supreme Court of Israel.

The institute is located on Mount Scopus, in one of the original buildings of the Hebrew University, built in 1925.

The institute is dedicated to promoting the research and teaching of Jewish (Halakhic) law. Special emphasis is given to making Jewish law challenging and relevant to modern legal discourse, in Israel and abroad.

Among its scholars the prominent Jewish law researchers of the past decades: Prof. Shmuel Shilo Prof. Mordechai Rabello Prof. Gideon Libson Prof. Hanina Ben–Menahem Prof. (Justice) Izhak Englard Prof. Eliav Shochetman Prof. Berachyahu Lifshitz

The Institute for Jewish Law is part of the Faculty of Law of the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, which is the flagship of judicial education and research in Israel. The Institutes Current activities (contd): 5.Organizing Jewish Law and Jurisprudence (Israel, 2010) and Jewish Law and Criminal Law (Israel, 2011) conferences. 6.Jewish Law Workshop, held its sixth year. 7.Ongoing collaboration of researchers.

Establish a Center for Advanced Studies in Jewish Law Future Goals

The Center for Advanced Studies in Jewish Law will significantly leverage the position of Jewish law with regard to the legal discourse in Israel, including the following activities: Develop a master degree program in Jewish law. Establish a framework for writing doctoral dissertations in Jewish Law Develop and implement international conferences for leading scholars in Israel and abroad. Continue research collaboration between Jewish law scholars and researchers in other legal fields. Host foreign researchers and create a framework for post-doctoral students. Establish scholarships for advanced studies abroad.
