Skin

Skin Serves Many Functions Protects the body from invaders. Keeps important things in. Prevents loss of water Maintain temperature Gathers information about your environment. Skin cells produce Vitamin D

What Does Your Skin Look Like? Three main layers: Epidermis Dermis Layer of fat.

Epidermis The outermost layer. Thinnest layer Dead Skin Cells Contains no nerves or blood vessels. That is why shallow scratches don’t bleed or hurt.

Epidermis Every 28 days we lose a layer of skin. Most important part of protection Dead cells don’t feel pain Calluses Create fingernails Produces “melanin”

Dermis Contains the nerves, blood vessels, and live skin cells. Sweat Glands Hair Follicles Pores

Hair follicle Sweat glands Sweat pore Where hair grows from Where “sweat” is made Sweat pore Where sweat comes out on the surface of the skin

Sebaceaus Glands Produce an oil called “sebum” Our waterproofing. Ever wonder why you wrinkle after you have been in the tub or swimming for a long time? Why do they really wrinkle?
