The Bloody Chamber: The Werewolf, The Company of Wolves and Wolf- Alice

Critical Perspectives Summarise each ‘wolf’ story in less than 50 words each. What critical perspectives have you found in your article research? Group 1= The Werewolf Group 2= Company of Wolves Group 3= Wolf Alice

Comparisons In what ways are the stories similar and in what ways do they differ? In your groups: Each person should read ONE story each As a group, complete the consensus map in the middle of the table.

The Werewolf The wolf is the embodiment of preceding generations of mothers (rather than the patriarchal view normally portrayed by wolves) Pathetic fallacy Condescending view of the people and their superstitions. Women’s attempts to free themselves domestically (‘she prospered’) Explore meaning in the term prospered in your pairs.

The Company of Wolves The wolves in the winter forest are hungry. A girl sets out through the forest to her Granny’s house. She meets a young man who bets her a kiss that he can reach the house first. The young man wolf arrives first and eats Granny. The young girl sleeps soundly in Granny’s bed with the wolf.

Feminist perspectives What approaches to feminism does Carter employ in this tale? Use textual support for your point.

Feminist perspectives Girl seizing control of the situation, burning the wolfs clothes as man is a greater threat than the wolf. meat-= archetypal viewpoint of women as sexual objects for the consumption of men.

Wolf- Alice Girl raised by wolves is brought back into society. Placed in the care of the Duke, a werewolf. The girl grows up and discovers puberty and dresses in white. The Duke, hunting as a wolf, is wounded. The girl tends his wounds and he regains his shape as the Duke.

Wolf- Alice Carter introduces the character at the start of the story as it is integral to the readers understanding. Make a note of the two most striking descriptions of her with page references.

Wolf- Alice Feral children raised by wolves: Romulus and Remus, founders of Rome being suckled by wolves. Set in 18th century Europe (Man Friday- Crusoe reference) What role does the mirror play within this tale?

A Question What are the moral values encapsulated by these tales and how does Carter feel about them?

B Question To what extent do you think gothic literature is characterised by a fascination with death?
