Potential Vorticity along CALCOFI Line 67 LCDR David Ruth Winter 2001

Overview Objectives Potential vorticity defined Method Observations Conclusions

Objectives Compute potential vorticity along CALCOFI Line 67 using cruise data from 4-8 December 2000 Evaluate output: explain apparent features

Potential vorticity defined PV  fρ-1dρ/dz Utility: CONSERVATION (large-scale circulation)

Method Data collection - 20 CTD stations along Line 67 sampled to 1000 dbar at 2 dbar intervals - ADCP data down to 400m Data analysis - MATLAB 5.3 - Hanning filter for smoothing - SEAWATER library routine to compute potential vorticity

Line 67 stations

Observations

Density anomaly

Conclusions Potential vorticity analysis revealing, but not intuitive Lesson in “liberty” with data SEAWATER library provides excellent tools
